Hanging On a Wire
elva
The delicate details of this beauty had us smitten from the start; we're suckers for intricate compositions--especially of the handmade sort, so it was without question that we were bringing this pair of vintage brooches home with us, despite the less-than-desirable damage they displayed. When we found them at one of our favorite flea-market destinations this fall, the brooches showed signs of water damage, having had a cluster of freshwater pearls wired with copper filament to the center of each flower. The wires were severely corroded and had begun to erode the pearls, so we decided to remove the decoration entirely and clean up the verdigris that had built up on the beautiful blooms.
The result was wonderful--we love the simplicity of the gorgeous golden blossoms without the added decoration (one of those rare Elva occasions when less may be more!) and we decided to keep the focus on the marvelousness of metallic, pairing the brooches with strands of matte-finished dark silver metal beads, dotted here and there with beads of faceted brass to hint at subtle golden shimmer throughout. A dramatic drape and a neutral palette makes this one a timeless classic. Measures 17.75" in length with a gilt copper box clasp at back.
