It's been said that we'll turn anything into a necklace - miniature pocket knives, pill boxes, snuff bottles, mechanical pencils, whistles - but this is definitely a first: an antique Chinese child's ear muff. (So it won't be the last, as we have its mate to make a second necklace!)
We were awestruck when we first spied the stunning silk embroidery, and the heart shape kind of stole ours, but when we realized they were ear muffs, that was it. We had to have them. And now one can be yours, a heart-shaped lovely that once kept a child's ears warm in the cold. The design is sweet and simple yet incredibly elegant: a flap of deep blue-purple silk on the reverse becomes like a pocket for the ear lobe, and the heart shape's bright blue front shows a dragon, an urn, a temple-like structure, and floral designs all in colorful silk threads at the interior. Beads of polished and faceted black onyx connect to hand-sewn loops at the tops of the ear muff-turned pendant, and a gilt copper toggle clasps the necklace at back.
