Starry Night Earrings

Elva Fields

Few sights are more awe-inspiring than the night sky overhead, sparkling stars waiting on wishes, reminding us how large the Universe must be, and twinkling as a reminder that we are stardust, friends.

Perhaps that's why I fell instantly in love with these glass gems when I discovered them at a market many years ago. Likely from the 1920s and made in Czechoslovakia, these are not only beautiful examples of that country's history of glass craftsmanship but also of jewelry's ability to capture the ephemeral and elegant essence of nature; the glossy black glass batons impressed with tiny stars are filled with real gold to create a tiny replication of the night sky in a drop of a jewel.

When I finally figured out a way to turn these gems into something wearable (adhering a brass bar and loop to their reverse) I knew they'd make the most magnificent earrings. Here they are, suspended from 14 karat gold filled wires to remind us that we are stardust and we are glamorously stylish, too. Each VERY limited-edition earring measures 1.25" length from hook's curve to glass pendant's finish.
