Write On Necklace

Elva Fields

School supplies have always been a favorite around here - especially when it comes to pens and pencils. You can imagine, therefore, the delight at discovering - years ago at a flea market - a tiny and MUCH more glamorous version of our beloved Bic mechanical pencil. It was turquoise and gold, twisted to produce the slender bit of lead, and would no doubt inspire only the most marvelous writing (or penmanship!)

Some of the vintage pencils we've found over the years were used for bridge game scoring, some for golf, others attached to a lady's chatelaine as part of her arsenal of handy household tools, but they each have had their own unique charm and diminutive size, along with a loop at their top that just seemed to beg to be added to a beaded strand or chain.

No matter their origin story, it has been a pleasure and a joy to gather and curate an assortment of these vintage mechanical pencils over the past few months to create a small-batch collection of necklaces, no doubt leading to inspired writing or - at the least - an interesting conversation about "What IS that wonder you're wearing???"

Here, a vintage neon orange-red resin pencil from the 1960s suspends cheerfully from vibrantly-hued striped beads from India made in a very Venetian style, along with faceted brass beads throughout for hints of glimmer. A vintage brass hook clasp by Napier allows for lengths ranging from 24" to 26" overall, pencil itself 4.25" length.
